Getting found is easy — anyone can resolve you for free. Knowing you really are talking to the right person is the part worth doing carefully.

Share your identity

Your handle

The friendly name — @you. Your profile lives at /@you. Handles are discoverable while your subscription is active.

Your fingerprint

The permanent id your identity is keyed by. It resolves at /p/<fingerprint> and keeps working for contacts who already have it, even if your handle lookup lapses.

Your profile & QR

Your profile page shows a QR of your card. Anyone can scan it, or look you up from the search box — no account needed.

Verify a contact — for real

The strongest guarantee Subter offers is that the fingerprint is the identity.To be sure who you’re talking to, compare their fingerprint out of band— in person, or over a channel you already trust — against the one your app shows for them. If they match, you have real, cryptographic certainty. If they don’t, something is wrong.

This out-of-band compare — not “a server said so” — is what marks a contact as verified in the app.

What a verified badge means

A badge on a profile (a linked GitHub, a verified domain) is directory-attested: Subter checked that link and signed a statement about it. That’s a genuine, useful signal — and its own trust tier. It is not the same as the fingerprint compare above, and it should never be treated as one. Weigh it for what it is: evidence Subter verified something, at a moment in time.
